I think there is another choice.  Work cautiously with adequate precautions
and avoid the plague.  Of course when bird flu hits (if it does) I'm out of
there.

It's a judgment call. Would you rather die of the plague, or 
starve? When you're self employed with nobody paying you for 
sick days, working sick is the coin of the realm.
