[pianotech] Sandpaper paddles!

Those look a lot like what I use. At this time I'm using a paint stirrer, old yardsticks. I've got a couple I made from the hammer dividers you get with Renner hammers. I'm gluing pieces of 1" sanding belts. 80 grit and 120 grit...I always go over the strike point with a wide sheet of 220 or higher...

I got this tip from Eric Shandall a couple of year ago: use double sided tape to affix your paper of choice to whatever size paddle you prefer. He found that about 1" x 6" worked well either for bulk removal, careful shaping, or finessing the strike point during hammer/string mating. About 80 grit on one side and 120 or so on the other. When the paper wears out it's easy to remove it, renew the tape, and start afresh. I keep these three, with grits from 80 to 320, in my voicing kit. At Steinway they use soundboard stock to make the wooden paddles. I used birch model aircraft plywood, available here and elsewhere. They (almost) make hammer filing enjoyable!

I've tried similar files and find they bend too much for me...

Greeetings,

No more making them! I found sandpaper paddles at the local beauty supply store! THey are 1" x 7" and are designated with the same standard grit numbers as sandpaper found at Lowe's or Home Depot. They are marked "no color residue" are sanitzable. The name on them is "Beauty Secrets" and best of all marked MADE IN THE USA! Theyare sturdy & work great!

Also, thanks for bushing cloth info.
