In WindowsXP:

-Put the pictures you want to send in the My Pictures folder.
-Right Click on the picture you want to send
-Left Click on 'Send To' - Mail recipient

A copy of the picture is compressed into the email, and you 
retain the original.

Try sending a pic to yourself first..a test picture.
