New Steinway Hammers was---hammer thickness trimming jig

On the other hand, I used SW "B" hammers on my C-7. I didn't lacquer them nearly as much, the tone was fabulous. Again, the gram weight and dimensions were close, except for the tails. I ordered the tails un-shaped and uncut from SW. A bit more work, but well worth the effort. Required far fewer voicings.

I tried the opposite, Ronson with Wurzen felt on a Grey market late 60's Yamaha
G2. I was very happy with the tone, but the Ronson's I used were much heavier
than the Yamaha hammers they replaced. This created some balance weight issues
that ended up compromising the feel of the action once additional lead was added
to the key. Still, it was a interesting experiment to hear the Yamaha with the
heavier Ronson's. Assist springs probably would have helped, I don't think
action ratio could have been lowered much.

Now that's a first for me. I wouldn't expect you would need lacquer on a
Yamaha hammer. The recent iterations supposedly use Wurzen felt but I have to

admit they would be a bit hard for my taste on that particular piano.

Having just read the blurb on the Steinway hammers: I have used Yamaha hammers
on my Steinway "O" and loved the results. I have never lacquered them. They are
a bit pricey but are nearly identical in gram weight and physical dimensions. I
did this after meeting a recording studio engineer from LA, whose piano had the
modification.
