Steinway M Backcheck Problem

The other thing I forgot to mention was that I *did* fit the frame in the piano.

While I didn't replace the hammers on this piano, when I do, I use the Spurlock jig to shape the tails and I never need to rough up the tails to get them to check properly in any piano I have done. I will check the shape on these tails against one of the tails I have shaped myself.

Thanks for the suggestions on this.

The thing that bothers me about this piano is that the backchecks come almost straight up from the key with a big outward bend at the top. I tried making a small bend at the bottom and taking away the big bend at the top, it didn't help in the bass, but helped somewhat in the other sections.

All is regulated properly, touch, a soft spring return, etc. I checked the hammer shank pining and fixed a few of those and also check the balancier pining for tightness.

I'll try working on the bench set up and reshaping the tails. The tails are quit rounded now. Do you think they should be a little flatter?

I had a similar problem with a D at the university. As John suggested, reshape and rough up the tails. Also check balancier pinning. But even when you've done all you can, I have seen this problem on brand new Steinways. So apparently it's something Steinway allows to happen.

I am regulating a 10 year old Steinway M with all original action parts. I am having a problem with checking. The piano checks 100% on the bench, but no checking at all in the bass section and 85% OK in all other sections. I have adjusted the angle on the backchecks with no success. Does anyone have any thoughts on what the problem my be and a possible fix?
