? Just got back from the Sierra Nevada's.? It was clearer there.?Calif is covered in a cloud of wild fire smoke. 
? This idea of counter boring the plate for the washer is absolutely brilliant. Having just done this less elegantly on the Henry Miller I'm happy to have this option.
?? As we can all see your method? locks the washer in place &?whatever compression or adhesion issues that may occur under neath the washer?will be minimal, & it can't squiggle around when tightening.
? If I were making these bolts... ?I'd charge ALOT ?more ! Yuh think! What's a few extra bucks on a "Custom Restored", world class piano? It's a very rugged system.?
? ?I'd prefer that that bolt head was thinner.? 2.5 mm max. So? counter sinking the bolt head relief hole?doesnt' need to penetrate?as deep into the soundboard wood. Also,If out of necessity the bolt head?needs to be installed so the top of it is set ?flush with he soundboard top any further bearing setting advantage is lost & then it's just a easy way to set the plate height. Know what I mean? So your idea of allowing for a thicker bridge cap if possible?& raising the plate a bit has plenty of merit.
? Many plate lag holes are off center from the factory. So...When I get my plate where I want it over the new pinblock I site down thru the plate holes & anything that looks askew I drill out with a 1/2 inch bit & fill it with 2?----1/2"dia. by 1 & 1/2" long?Pinblock type plugs & epoxy. It's painless & then a perfectly aligned hole?is possible by sighting down thru the plate hole again & centering?a new hole?with?a brad point?drill bit to insure centering. Is that clear??

Yes, you probably should make whatever modifications to the soundboard & rim in terms of providing a counterbore wide enough to allow the plate to be as low as you'll need it. If you are doing this, chances are that you are also making new bridgecaps, so if the original plate is sitting so low along the rim as it does on many Steinways, you should probably address this at the bridgecap first.

Many?Masons have countersunk holes for the perimeter lag screws that will not accommodate the new suspension bolts of any system. Ron N. suggested to me that I fill the holes with epoxy and "plate grindings additive." This would work and since I prime my plates, there would be no bonding issues. Alternatively, I decided to use a counterbore and pilot that would accommodate a SS washer. These washers can be epoxied in place, the countersink and hole will also be filled and then the washer gives a pilot for redrilling the hole. The washer will be left unfinished solving any problems of the bolt marring the paint as it is tightened down.

Cost. Yeah well that's always the rub. It's an option that has to be passed on to the customer. If we're talking a few bucks on big job, I'm happy to support the folks at M&H and their effort to not only?resurrect WNG, but to add some revolutionary thinking to the catalogue. I like MSC too.
