Matthew, all -
You asked a perfectly legitimate question, but as various issues 
regarding list behavior have been explored recently, I thought it 
would be helpful, for anyone interested, to go back and look at the 
range of the discussion that transpired under "Breaking a 
String".  One could, possibly make a case for 
stream-of-consciousness, up to the question below, which deserves a 
new subject heading.  Observing such practice will certainly make it 
easier to recover any gems of wisdom in the future.

Not to mention taking some responsibility for rational editing of 
quoted material.  As a new question, none of what came before was necessary.
