Noisy Dampers on Shift

Loosen the set screw and see if the underlever is free to glide along the wire.
It might be tight in the hole so you might need to remove the wire to determine
if the bends are optimal.

The wire might be bound between the top flange and guide rail. One manufacturer
prefers to have the wire with side bearing on the bushing but I like 
to have the
damper operate without that drag.

With a tool pressed to the side of the head (I use a 90 degree wire bender)
make sure the top section of the wire is parallel. Hold the damper in 
the bushing,
is the top section perpendicular to the guide rail and the head centered over
the unison. With those ascertained, does the bottom section of the wire line
up with the hole in the top flange? A small drill bit in the hole 
helps to visualize this.

Lightly score the felt surface with a checkering file, slice the felt 
up to the head
with a razor blade.

Are the tips of the trichord felt equal widths?
