 From everything you say the plank is a botched replacement.  I forget 
the configuration of the blind bolts, but you'll see how things were 
done when you get things out.

Let me know the wire sizes you find as well.  For the bass, just give 
me the overall diameter and core diameter of four strings -- first 
and last single, first and last pair.
