Half a millimetre. JD I was going to say a millimeter, but certainly not 1/4" (6.35mm). You'll have lots of problems, including poor tone from undercentering, heavier touch from the friction of the shank being too low, and probably the inability to get enough blow distance due to the shanks hitting the rest felts. What information was given to the person who bored them?
