Ron, I can go one better. Tuned a Peinter and Ewing (Cunningham) the other day,ca:1920's I think. It had the entire outer surface covered in a product called "Duran" vinyl with nail head trim. It looked like a flat black lacquer finish, and was very well done, like a good upholsterer would do.
