Casters

I am installing new casters onto an upright piano. The new ones came with 
wooden bushings which are too wide in diameter and a bit too long to fit in 
the legs hole. I don't want to bash them into the hole for fear of splitting 
something. I'm thinking of sanding the bushings to fit. Anyone done this 
before and how did you deal with it?
