Hey Now,

To expand on that thought just a bit. Why would you file the capo? Noise/ zingers? I like the explanation very much (italic u ). Please give us some examples as to why we might desire to file the capo.

The files are used to shape the capo bar either in an inverted position (out of the piano), or with careful preparation, in the piano. The proper file has a radius (curvature) which comes pretty darn close to the desired shape and radius of the capo. It is used just like any file by cutting laterally along the capo with the file and radius controlled perpendicular to the capo (and maybe offset just slightly toward the counterbearing side of the capo. The final desired shape might be characterized as an italic U (U).  For sure, it's not a V!
