Replacement Bass String won't hold tune

Paul:

I've just had the rarest circumstance on a 1918 Chickering and Sons restoration. While I was stringing, I noticed that several of the hitch pins were bending to the front. In three instances, I had to drive out the old pin after breaking it off flush with the plate and install new hitch pins. Never seen this before, but the hitch pin array was very uneven in height, and the whole stringing job has given me jitters, particularly since this piano is being shipped to its owner in California. This might also be a cause of your problem, but very low probability.

Mike and John, Thanks!

Mike, that's a good thing to check for (if in fact it's actually considerably flatter than the rest of the piano!) I probably would not have thought to check it, particularly since it's an upright and it takes a conscious effort to look at the far end of the string.

John, I considered that it may be a loose pin, and I'll check that first when I get there (and I'll have CA handy, JIC.) I guess I'll know a lot more once I actually <SEE> the piano!

    Hi Paul:
I had the same thing happen on a S&S "M". Install a new bass string and within a week or two I had to retune. This happened several times within the space of a month until I discovered the loop on the hitch pin end of the string was slipping! It made it impossible to keep the tension on the string up to pitch as it kept getting longer and longer. The string maker S----F, replaced it with no question. Can't remember if it was a universal or not, but in this case it wouldn't have mattered.
