Heard a piano with a new soundboard the other day (Steinway). The treble (C5 and up) had that plink, plink rather than bing, bing sound. Assuming it's not the hammers (which it isn't), is that type of failure always one of inadequate stiffness or are there other factors, or combination of factors, that might account for it?
