Dear Barbara,
When I commented on the cold calling thing I was not trying to say that you
should portray yourself as someone else. I think you read more into what my
comment was than what I said.
Many times, in institutions, because of changing personnel who answer
the phone, stating your name as the piano tuner does not get you
recognition. By stating it has been X amount of time since the piano was
last tuned or stating the tuning frequency of time this can get you instant
access to tuning the piano. It is NOT deceiving if you state who you are
and not saying you represent anyone else. . Many times your call may be
made at just the right time. I have had many institutions where someone
else has done that very same thing. To me that is not unethical but a
lucky break for whoever made the call at the right time.
