My experience with these is that they are more useful on larger 
instruments than smaller.  Also, as Guy notes, some experimentation 
is in order.  I've found it most useful to have someone other than 
myself doing the tightening/loosening while I move around 
listening.  Sometimes there is a very noticeable change.  Sometimes, 
whatever change occurs is more subtle.  Also, I tend to think that 
they have more use on older (pre-1980 or so) instruments.
