Hi Roger,

Wow, thanks for the tip. I'll be sure to check it out.

Has this been a problem for a while? I'm not sure how old the piano is, =
but when looking on the Samick website, the model numbers had changed. =
I suppose I could call Samick to get the age of the piano.

Best,

Barbara Richmond

  Hi Barbara,
Your problem is the height of the balance rail =
hole. I will bet money it is in the 7 to 9mm range.
It needs to be reamed down to 4mm, before you do anything else. =
Pianotech has a Balance rail hole reamer part#KCS-1B that will do the =
job. Keep your finger firmly on the bottom of the BR hole and ream until =
the tip of the reamer touches your finger tip.
This is the number one cause of slow repetition, and spongy feel.=20

The change of punching's will give a good improvement, after the holes =
are reamed to the correct height, but will be of little benefit if the =
holes are not reamed.=20

When the BR hole is too tall the walls of the hole starts to bind on =
the pin making after touch very ill defined.

This problem was corrected on my last visit to the plant.

Next week I'm going to regulate a nice little Samick console piano. =
The last time I tuned it (our first appointment), I noticed and =
mentioned to the owner that the piano could really use some attention. =
The owner's son is a music major and she reported he had never liked the =
touch of the piano. I'm not sure if they bought it new or used, but the =
regulation is pretty bad. When I was there I didn't think to check the =
firmness of the punchings (this is the only Samick I've ever worked on, =
can you believe it?). <Anyway> I was wondering if anyone had changed =
out the front rail punchings using Crescendo (Wurzen) punchings on a =
vertical piano? I guess I'll experiment to see what improvement can be =
had in an effort to eke out a bit more performance. =20
