to shim or not

The service manual for Baldwin pianos states very clearly that if the
sostenuto brackets need to be moved horizontally, do NOT shim them to change
their position horizontally. Instead ( at least on older pianos without
adjusting screws ) they want us to bend the brass or aluminum brackets.
Bending brackets seems to me a hazardous method - especially on older pianos
where the metal may be brittle. What harm is there in putting a thin piece
of card stock behind the bracket to shim it out if need be??
