Problem with Rubber Mutes Falling in Upright Piano

    Hi Robert:
    You will get a lot of response to your question.  My suggestion is to roughen the surfaces of the mute with a coarse file, rough sandpaper or a checkering file-the kind used on grand hammer tails.  This helps to keep it in place between the strings.  Someone is going to suggest tying a string or yarn to the mute handle, for me they get in the way, and you still have to re install the mute when it works loose.  You might also try pushing them in place a bit more firmly.
