As I mentioned, I filed a hammer, packed it with a voicing tool handle ~and~ 
ironed it, with minimal results.

Thanks for the info Don!!  My initial reaction was that it might be a 
factory thing due to the uniformity of the lines.  The fact that they 
usually appear after being exposed to moisture helps explain the dead sound. 
Also. I did not take notice when I was at the piano but upon looking at the 
photo, the strike point sure looks unusually fluffy, as if something wet was 
applied.  (I forgot my reading glasses that day..)
