Hi David, If the room where the piano exam is being held has unstable humidity or temperature then yes the Master Tuning will not be stable either. Whether it would be enough of a difference to cause a go/no go situation would depend on a lot of factors--one of them being that the exam does have a built in "tolerance". If a Master tuning was created at say 15% humidity (quite possible where I live) and then applied to the same instrument when humidity was 60% (assuming the piano was in equilibrium at the higher humidity level), then the Master tuning may not "fit" as well as it should. If the piano was then put back into the 15% humidity and allowed to reach equilibrium again--the Master Tuning would "fit" again. As to "fair"--well it is still "fair" because all the people trying the exam have the same conditions.
