I'm not an engineer by any means, but I always believed that the bridle 
straps aided in the return of the hammer. Meaning that the hammer is 
started to pull to return then the hammer spring kicks in and does the 
rest.  Especially if in the older upright actions where, I'm sure, the 
hammer springs are getting weaker or the action is tighter because of 
swelling due to humidity.
