You're probably right.  I dunno...Baldwin historians?  Where's  Roger Jolly?
 
I also had one Baldwin Studio of perhaps the same age that had the jacks  
back-thwacking the butts because of inadequate aftertouch.

What you're hearing, in all likelihood, is Corfam, the material used to  
cover the hammer butts.  Baldwins of a certain vintage are notorious  for the 
knocking sounds created by the action.

    I thought the same until the gentleman said it was a  35 year old piano.
    Corfam was introduced around 1980 
    Baldwin historians ----   am I correct  here?
