Hi fella, When using the shift/soft pedal in most grands the action slides
over to the right causing the hammers to hit in a different spot than at
rest, depending how much the pedal is depressed.
 So that if the strings and hammers are not level AND mated on each
unison---------.
I know you are very aware of this and wish that I could explain more clearly
but alas it is easier for me to show than write about it.
