While there are more complicated answers, the bottom line is that the 
Internet is not designed for quality sound and/or video 
transmission.  There are techniques which allow one to cheat; but the 
underlying fact is that it was set up to transmit different data.  Note 
that this all comes before any discussion of what kind of connection one 
might have, computer one owns, sound equipment attached thereto...etc.
