This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ---------------------- multipart/alternative attachment Joe, you make a good point: plug-in electric vehicles are powered (most = places) by coal -- burning in the power plants that provide the = electricity. So they don't prevent pollution, they just shift its = location. The Prius, however, is not a plug-in; the electricity comes from = charging by the gas engine, and (best of all) from regenerative braking. = When you "engine brake" with an electric engine, it *generates* = electricity. You get a range of 300 - 400 miles as a result, about = double that of the plug-in cars. The performance is downright snappy, = too! I was on the waiting list for a Prius until I realized that (a) it only = gets about 41 mpg in the real world (not 60), and (b) it only has 4" of = ground clearance, which would kill us here in rural WV. See = http://prius.com. =20 Practically any new technology needs to be backward-compatible for wide = acceptance: DVD players also play CDs, FM radios also play AM (by law), = etc. I think this is a great concept, avoiding the huge startup cost = (and hazards) of installing chargers all across the country. =20 --Cy Shuster-- Bluefield, WV ----- Original Message -----=20 From: Joe Garrett=20 To: pianotech=20 Sent: Sunday, July 03, 2005 5:33 PM Subject: Re: Energy Sussssan said: "1993 Toyota Corolla wagon, 31 mpg, and kinda wishing I = had a plug-in Prius instead." TSK! TSK! Susan! 31 mpg is "wasting" fuel IMO. The technology has been = around way longer than your 93! My 85 190D gets at least 40mpg. And, on = a recent trip to Bend it got 49! As for the "Prius", that's a damned = JOKE, they don't get as good a mileage as you get. AND they are selling = at ridiculous prices! AND, where do you think the electricity comes = from? From all those Dams that are killing our Native Species Fish! = Solar/Electric is the only answer. Save the oil for lubing the wheels = and action parts!<G> Joe Garrett, R.P.T.
