Wouldn't such a washer also tend to prevent the locknut below from =
turning when the hanger bolt is raised? If the hanger bolt is backed out =
to raise the plate, but the nut below doesn't turn with the bolt, then =
the plate remains stationary.=20

  Dean:

I always fix the nut below with locktite and or a set screw. So that =
is not a problem. The nut below must be positioned so that the acorn =
nut does not bottom out. If the hanger bolt is too long, I cut it off =
to proper length and then slot the end to allow it to be turned with a =
flat blade screwdriver. =20

You are correct that only if the screw is loose in the rim it might =
turn. I don't like it too tight and use beeswax on the threads. I =
have on ocassion made slight changes in plate height after the piano is =
up to pitch. Just a bit in certain areas where a little more =
downbearing is needed. Makes you nervous though. If a larger area were =
to be lowered, I'd remove every other nut, turn the hanger bolts say a =
quarter turn, replace the nuts (not too tight) then repeat for the =
alternate ones. I know that's scary but you only live once.

I catch a lot of flack for removing the "acoustic dowels". Somehow, =
I'm not convinced that is such a forbidden act. Maybe acoustic dowels =
complete the circle of sound????

Although I don't have any personal experience with the system yet, it =
seems like you are trying to prevent an inconsequential problem. If it =
the acorn nut tightens sufficiently within a reasonable amount of turns =
after contacting the plate, that alone is evidence that bolt is not =
turning significantly. If you can't tighten the acorn nut, then maybe =
there is a problem.
