Hi Calin This is one of those areas where I find myself very much in aggreement with posts written by Ron Overs on the subject. The ribs on Bechsteins, like all other pianos, are glued. I dont find many pianos at all with loose ribs, but I have little doubt that the probability for these are just as high for Bechsteins as for any other piano. Tho I have not seen a Bechstein with loose ribs, I have run into a couple through the years with these screws visably loose. The ribs are weakened in the sense that their is less material there to hold crown. How much this affects them is another matter entirely, but their use certainly cant be justified by how much damage to rib strength they are/ *not */guilty of. Perhaps the reason this practice was discontinued is because the actual benifit was not worth putting them in there in the first place ??... just a thought.
