Isolate a beating string with mutes. Gently push a screwdriver blade 
to the side of the speaking length bridge pin opposite the string as 
you play the note. If the beat stops when the pressure is on the 
pin, and returns when the screwdriver is removed, the beat is caused 
by the springing pin. This should be, but rarely is, the very first 
thing a tuner should do to try and diagnose the cause of the beat 
before attempting to "fix" anything.
