I ONLY seat strings when I can see the string move down with a modest tap. When that happens I always hear a focusing of the tone and the pitch drops dramatically. I will have to go through the tuning twice but the stability from then on...for a time...is improved. I don't seat strings as a regular part of service... I also don't think seating strings is done for eliminating false beats.
