This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ---------------------- multipart/alternative attachment Hi,Dave! Most of older pianos have hide glue glue joints,so,vinegar works on them.I had no problems softening titebond joints to pull hammer shanks apart. On a few occasions,I'd used vinegar to soften glue joints and then applied 50% hide glue [cold one} and 50% water to form nice collars over again. It worked. For one of the classes I'd asked organizers to bring a real old klunker action, every joint was loose. After vinegar was applied-15 minutes later most of the joints were tight again. I'd followed my jobs a few years later and found glue joints solid,no clicks coming out of hammers.Hope,it will turn pessimists into believers. Happy Holidays to everyone.. _____ From: pianotech-bounces@ptg.org [mailto:pianotech-bounces@ptg.org] On Behalf Of David Ilvedson Sent: Saturday, December 10, 2005 9:51 AM To: pianotech@ptg.org Subject: RE: regluing hammers Isaac, Does vinegar work on any glue? To reglue loose hammer heads just apply some vinegar on the glue joint and 12 minutes later it will re-juvenate the glue and will be hard again. This trick I had learned long time ago from late Bob Russell and shared it in many of my classes and it made it to the Journal, also. It works!!! Also,to remove hammers or to loosen weak glue joint-use vinegar and 4 minutes later it easely comes apart.Works on loose-sqaky chairs and antique furniture. Also, you can do it in the piano without removing the action and taking it to your shop... Good Luck!! A customer of mine has a Wurlitzer spinet with 54 loose hammer heads that click when they are played. I was unable to remove the heads while the action was in the piano. The glue is loose, but not loose enough to be able to pop them off. I am planning to remove the action, take it back with me and remove and reglue the hammers. What chemical is recommended to soften the glue enough to remove the heads? Thank you very much. Brian P.
