Stupid answer #10:  Never let go of the end.

Seriously, before you pull the end out of it's retaining hole, figure out exactly what you're going to do with it.  You'll need to bend the end to make it thread easily, and grip it with pliers or vice-grips.  figure you're going to waste 6" or so on the end, and just grab it and bend in a way that it will easily line up with the holes in the brake.  You've only got one hand to use on the end of the wire, because the other one is holding the reel in a way that keeps the wire from unwinding.
