Jonathan should start by finding out whether it's 100% of the dampers or one or a few that are ringing. Just one misaligned wedge felt at the break can make a lot of noise. Likewise the low bass dampers could be rubbing against each other, causing them to sustain. Sometimes flicking the offending damper a few times gets to seat acceptably. Sometimes you'll be able to unkink an irregular damper wedge. It might be necessary to replace one or two of the original felt. As others have suggested -- was there anything you did to the piano (adjust lost motion, tighten screws) beyond removing and reinstalling the action? And as Tom D. suggested -- join the Guild, get the CDs, attend regional & international seminars ASAP!
