While I value what you wrote in your email and don't disagree in 
general, when I lived in Britain I came to realise that most Americans 
have a poor world-view (including my former self), not necessarily our 
"chief ambassadors", as you say. At the same time I think it is 
partially because America is relatively self-sufficient, a great 
blessing!

I only say this because, as others on the list would agree, I think it 
should be in every American's interest to *really* understand the great 
value of other countries and their cultures. As you said, because of 
technology the world is becoming "smaller". If we can value other 
cultures we won't run the risk of forcibly influencing them to change 
their culture to fit ours - since America is very influential. There is 
so much personality in other countries (personally I find America 
rather bland, given its limited history), it would be a shame to loose 
it.
