Can't imagine one can expect much stability from a piano in a church up =
north without any humidity control. But I suppose you are suggesting =
that it is significantly less stable that other pianos at other =
churches? Tell us more. How much does pitch range? Does it go up and =
down, or only down? Does it change evenly across the scale? Does it stay =
near pitch, but individual strings go off one way or another? How much? =
Do the strings seem to render easily? Do the tuning pins have 500+ =
inch-pounds of arm-fracturing, wrench-bending, tip-breaking, =
bench-busting torque?

Or, maybe the piano is screwed up. I learned to tune on a old Starr =
upright. I tried tuning that thing dozens and dozens of times. After =
each try I would take my SAT and check the tuning and it would always be =
WAY off. I was about ready to give up on this career. Then we bought a =
new Steinway 1098. After a few months, I decided to try and tune the =
1098. It tuned up just fine - arm-fracturing, wrench-bending, =
tip-breaking, flagpoling-pins and all. I tuned it several times and each =
time the SAT indicated an acceptable tuning. I'd go back to the Starr =
and try and tune it and it would not stay. I never did figure out what =
the heck was wrong with that piano. It was in pretty good shape as far =
as old uprights go. I did a pinblock/frame repair to it. To this day I =
don't know what the trouble was. Maybe your piano has the same =
affliction - Starritus?

I need some help or suggestions. For the past few years I have been =
tuning a Hamilton Baldwin 125th anniversary piano in a church in =
Southern Ontario Canada. Its 48 inches. I go for Easter Christmas etc. =
It is the most unstable rascal I have ever dealt with. Budget =
restrictions forbid a Damp-Chaser, even though I explained long term =
benefits in stability and savings. They wondered about other pianos of =
this type and thought it might be the piano. I even offered to let them =
get another tuner and see if it makes a differance. Maybe I am missing =
something.....any input or ideas, gratefully received.
