Hence the popularity of bird's-eye maple, no? One cross ply of that stuff 
on the far side could counter-act an entire panel of crotch mahogany or 
burled walnut with ease. And soooo much fun to work with! %^)

Wouldn't hurt to do the bottom of the block, eh? Sure would look cool. 
Bird's eyes and t-pin holes galore! Be a booger to counter-sink, though. 
I'd think that tear-out would be a headache. Oh well. A cloud for every 
silver lining......
