While installing new damper felt on a Hamilton with longer versions overall, I am also extending the shanks on a few notes at the lower tenor break to accommodate longer bichord felt there. Is there a general rule as to a limit of what is practicable for a length of shank, aside from fitting to the strings. Is there a ratio of (shank length)/(jack length) or some such? Just curious, before I delve into the wonderful world vertical dampers and geometry.
