List,

I'm not sure exactly what I pay. My office manager handles it, but it's nowhere near that number. Not even close. In Ohio, you purchase your coverage through the state. the rates can vary year to year depending on how their investments are doing. That's why there have been so many increases lately. Because of the flat stock market.

I'd be interested in what you pay for a worker compensation insurance that covers you. Most insurers are not happy to do so and I've seen rates varying from $1500 to $2000 per month. I suppose if you incorporate you can reduce some of that angst. Typically when a worker comp certificate is required you get the minimal insurance, exempting yourself as a company officer, that covers an occasional part-time employee. You present that certificate to the demanding party. They don't know or care wether you're covered. All they needed was another slip of paper in their file to present in the case of an injury showing that they don't have to cover for worker compensation. They might have some liability, but they have insurance for that too. Typically when a comp certificate is asked for, they want a commercial liability insurance certificate too.

List, this is becoming commonplace for institutions. It's really not a bad idea to have this coverage. Not only do you, as a sole proprietor have to this coverage, but if you have subcontractors, they have to also.
In fact, many want you to have liability coverage as well.
What do these people think we are, professional business owners?

List, An RPT in a nearby town recently received a letter from one of the officials of a church, for whom he had been tuning pianos for several years, that stated that he would no longer be able to tune for that church until he had obtained Workman's Compensation insurance, which runs about $1500 per year in this part of the country. Have any of you ever encountered such?
