Ed,

One thing to watch out for:  I have seen in old spinets and consoles, a set
of screws in the balance rail, whose purpose is to support, not hold down,
the rail.  In other words, tighten these screws and the rail comes up
(you've got to loosen the other screws first, the ones that actually do
hold the rail down).
