I was summoned to work on a Charles Walter yesterday, and could not feel the letoff except on a few keys . there is plenty of key height and dip.It looks as though someone added more key weight.I found pencil lines on the keys where the leads looked different than the originals.The jack seems to kinda roll off the butte with no clunk . Would someone please help.

Buttes are flat hills in Nebraska.  The let-off shouldn't "clunk" ,i.e., it shouldn't be noisy or have much resistance.  But the key leads should have no influence at all on where let-off takes place.  That's all a function of key height and where the regulating buttons are set (and key-dip, but key-dip does not affect let-off, either, unless it's too shallow, in which case let-off might not even take place; and if it's too deep, the jack might jam against the regulating rail or the catcher).  Does the tip of the jack come away from the butt leather about 3/16" or so?  Are the butt leathers deeply grooved?  Are the regulating rail screws tight and the buttons centered over the jack tenders?  Hard to say what's going on without more specifics.
