Does anyone have any experiences or advice to relate to my client in
preparing his piano for shipping?

Crate it. Please crate it. Do not fail to crate it. Deal with a reputable
freight forwarder; a high-end furniture or antiques dealer in your area
should be able to help with a referral. Let it get on a plane rather than a
ship.

Hope this helps. I've done it a lot coming the other way.....
