Strange front string mutes?

Forgive another newbie question, but what is being used here to mute the front non-speaking string segments?  They look like pink dampers on each unison.

    That's just the stringing felt underneath the strings, which take an arched dive down to the agraffes.  _Dave Nereson, RPT, Denver
