Tommy,
  I use an old iron,with a wet cloth to remove the old tops,and then a router 
to remove the difference in wood,from the thinner (usually)tops,to the new 
thicker molded tops.
The router also cleans and levels the top for a smoothe glue joint.I have 
found that I like PVC-E glue, more than any other,for the plastic to wood 
bond.
