Breaking strings on a new Kawai grand

I am told that it's not just a strong initial impact that matters. When a
pianist plays loudly with the sustain pedal down, it gives the string a
chance to have larger and larger oscillations each time it is hit.
Eventually the oscillations are too large for the string to take.
