Dear Hazen, Last winter the New Yorker magazine ran a wonderful, 6 page article on why you should NOT get back surgery! 95% of people with herniated discs will heal without it, eventually. I got 2 herniations in my lower back last year and could not walk at all for a month. I lost my house and shop due to being unable to work, but its much better now. It may be very depressing at times and you might fall into a very black pit of despair, but wait if you can. Mine healed with prayer, nutritional supplements ( Vitamin C. etc.-ask a good natural health expert ) ranged around my bed, and a LOT of TCM (Turner Classic Movies). Good Luck!
