Hi Jack,

The staple weighs 0.11 grams. With a 5 to 1 ratio, not accounting for
friction that means 0.55 grams at the key, with friction probably more than
that.

Staples are a hold over from the days when adhesives were not adequate to
hold the felt in place. They are essentially cosmetic. I believe the
originals were really a wire tie that looped (i.e. one single wire which
was fastened by twisting and bending it over).
