Setting and curing are very different things when it comes to any glue. The single purpose of a clamp is to prevent vibration from effecting a glue joint. The cauls are clamps. While the glue does hold the felt in place it is always best to leave the cauls in so the felt and glue size the mortise for a superior fit. That is, of course, assuming you sue the superior more tightly woven cloths available.
