Better Bass Scale for M&H A

It's not as clear as I would have liked in these low-resolution photos, but
the backscale length at A-1 went from approximately 25 mm (most of which is
made up of twisted--i.e., approximately doubled--0.065" steel rod) to 75 mm
with the looped string pivoting at the vertical hitch.

What do you supposed happened to the tone in the low bass?
