I wonder if he has a formula for balancing the lead in his keel with the buoyancy and geometry of the hull above it? It's really a similar question. You have the hull's ultimate stability to consider - balancing keel weight (lead in keys) with keel depth (key length), hull width or beam (wippen and knuckle geometry), and then the weight of the hull and rigging above the water line (hammer on top). Although they do differ a bit - the piano action is to be nearly balanced so that only a low amount of weight will depress the key, while the sailing yacht will want to require a relatively large amount of force to tip it - but yet, just as in the case of the piano action, you want some tendency to tip (heel), but not too much - there will be an optimal zone. Maybe this is where some of David's thinking has its roots?

Ok. Enough of this diversion. Back to this very much falling apart Tokai studio action - all the center pins are falling out, etc. Some of the jack center pins were out and have cut through the adjacent jack flange! Also, several hammers came off in a group because the butt flange center pins had migrated half way into their neighbors. YIKES!

Obviously, not well focused today!
